Frequently Asked Questions: HCBS Waiver Support Services
Basic Homemaker services focus on the provider performing essential household tasks—such as laundry, dusting, and vacuuming—to maintain a healthy living environment for the client. Enhanced Homemaker services include these same tasks but add a teaching component. The provider works with the individual to help them learn how to accomplish these chores themselves, encouraging independence and skill development based on their specific abilities.
Yes. While Respite care is often provided in the home to give primary caregivers a break from daily stressors, it can also take place in various community settings. This allows the individual to enjoy activities in places like local parks or community centers, ensuring they remain socially active and engaged while their caregiver rests or attends to other responsibilities.
Mentorship is specifically designed to help adult clients navigate major life transitions and self-advocacy. Mentors provide real-world role modeling and practical assistance, such as helping a client fill out job or school applications, practicing professional phone etiquette, and preparing for interviews. The goal is to build the client's confidence so they can successfully navigate these environments independently.
While personal hygiene—such as showering, grooming, and brushing teeth—is a core part of Personal Care, the service is broader than just hygiene. It includes assistance with various activities of daily living (ADLs), such as meal preparation and exercise routines. These services are provided within the home setting to ensure the client can live safely and healthily in their own environment.
All care providers, whether they are focused on Respite, Homemaker, Mentorship, or Personal Care, must be at least 18 years of age.
